A few facts about Kauri Pine

Queensland kauri pine is one of Australia’s native softwood timber species. Its species name, Agathis robusta, is derived from its cones, which look like a ball of thread (agathis), combined with its vigorous growth (robusta). An attractive timber suited to many indoor uses, including fine cabinetry, the Queensland kauri was heavily logged in the early years of European settlement. Large trees are therefore more rare now than in pre-European times; despite this, the species is not classified as endangered.

The wood of the Queensland kauri is creamy-white. The surface is plain in appearance, and the timber has a fine grain and clear, even texture that is much darker than Hoop Pine. The shimmering ray flecks that occur on the face of quarter-cut timbers distinguish it from hoop and bunya pines, which produce a less startling figure.

Now a rare timber, the Queensland kauri is almost completely cut out and does not perform well in plantations. Other Agathis species are found in North Queensland and New Guinea. The New Zealand kauri is also almost unobtainable now.

Kauri Pine Wine Flight

Limited run (1 of 3) Kauri Wine Flights. This is the first wine flight I’ve designed and made and I’m fairly happy with the result. The top is from a reclaimed plank of Kauri Pine which I was able to machine and cut down into three suitable tops. The small Blackwood feet (which took way too long to make…) are tenoned into the top and angled just enough to clear the base of a reasonable size wine glass. The flight will comfortably hold four glasses up to 84mm in diameter (pictured glasses are 80mm).

  • Dimensions: 384mm long x 99mm wide x 59mm high
  • Finish: Whittle’s Hard Wax Oil (satin)
  • The remaining two flights are in production and will be ready late December 2023

Note: the Kauri for this project was purchased (by myself) over 20 years ago having been used for another purpose in the family. Amazingly, for a board almost 400mm wide and exposed to some water, it had stayed flat. Given the history and reclaimed nature, the bottom of the board surface may show some small blemishes and defects.
